OVERVIEW OF JACK OFF

Jack Off, also known as Jack Foolery, One-eyed Jack, and commercially as Sequence, is a card game for 2 to 4 players. When played with 4 players, they are usually divided into teams of 2. The goal of the game is to be the first team or player to get a completed row of 5 chips. This is achieved by playing cards from your hand that match the cards on the board.

SETUP

To set up the game, you will need to do the following:

  1. Gather the necessary supplies. If you have the commercial game Sequence, all the supplies should be included. If not, you will need to curate your own supplies.
  2. For 2 or 4 players, each player will need 50 chips in two separate colors. For a 3-player game, each player will need 40 chips in three colors.
  3. Create your board if you don’t have the commercial version. You will need a separate full deck of 52 cards (excluding jokers), glue, scissors, and a sturdy surface to glue the pieces on. Remove all jacks from the deck, leaving you with 50 cards. Cut two square pieces from each card, usually opposing corners, to create 100 pieces for the board. Place the jokers in the four corners of the board and arrange the remaining pieces in a grid-like pattern.
  4. Once the board is complete, the dealer can start the game. There is no official way to determine the dealer, so a random selection is acceptable. The dealer shuffles the cards and deals each player a specific number of cards based on the number of players. In a 3-player game, each player receives 7 cards, in a 3-player game, each player receives 6 cards, and in a 4-player game, each player receives 5 cards. The remaining cards are placed facedown to create a draw deck.

Card Ranking

In Jack Off, there is no card ranking. The focus of the game is on card matching rather than the value of individual cards.

GAMEPLAY

The game begins with the player to the left of the dealer and continues clockwise. On their turn, a player will play a card from their hand and place one of their chips on a corresponding spot on the board. The objective is to create a row of 5 chips either diagonally, vertically, or horizontally. Once a player has played a card and placed a chip, they draw the top card from the draw pile and pass the turn to the next player.

If a jack is played, special rules apply. If a red jack is played, it acts as a wild card, and the player can place a chip in any open space on the board. If a black jack is played, the player can choose to have an opponent remove any chip from the board.

The game continues until a player or team completes the required number of uninterrupted straight lines of 5 chips. In a 2 or 4-player game, two rows of 5 chips are needed to win. In a 3-player game, only one row is required. In a 2 or 4-player game, the rows may intersect in one space, or there may be two complete lines of 5 chips.

The first player or team to complete their required rows wins the game.
