Setup

Before starting the game, players must go through the setup process:

  1. Ensure all players are seated in a way that they can easily view the video screen.
  2. Separate and shuffle the time, fate, and chance cards.
  3. Separate and shuffle the keys by color.
  4. Place the coin and die near the game board for easy access.
  5. Each player selects a nightmare card and secretly writes their worst fear on it. These nightmare cards are then placed in the nightmare bag.
  6. Players choose their characters and are assigned number tokens.

  8. Make sure the VHS tape is ready to play, and press the play button to start the game.

Gameplay

Nightmare gameplay revolves around the instructions and prompts given by the Gatekeeper, who controls the flow of the game. Here are some key aspects of the gameplay:

  • The Gatekeeper explains the rules and sets the stage for the game at the beginning of the tape.
  • The game has a time limit of one hour.
  • Players are not allowed to move their pieces when the Gatekeeper is on the screen.
  • Every time the Gatekeeper refers to a player by number or any identifier, the player must immediately respond with “yes my gatekeeper”.
  • The main goal is to collect all 6 colored keys before time runs out.
  • Keys can be obtained through certain cards, interactions with the Gatekeeper, or landing on specific spaces on the board.
  • Once a player has obtained all their keys, they must not proceed down the nightmare path in the center of the board.
  • To reach the nightmare space, players must roll an exact number on the die.
  • Upon reaching the nightmare space, the player must draw a nightmare card from the bag. If the nightmare card matches the player’s worst fear, they lose the game. If not, they may stop the tape.
  • Time cards provide tasks with time stamps and offer rewards for completing them.
  • Chance cards involve coin toss outcomes, player-specific outcomes, and the possibility of obtaining key halves.
  • Fate cards are related to opponents landing on a player’s gravestone, black holes, and other similar events.

End of Game

The game ends either when the one-hour timer is up and the Gatekeeper wins, or when a player successfully completes the challenge and beats the game by collecting all the keys before time runs out. The suspense and time pressure add to the intensity of the game, making each playthrough unique and thrilling.
