Objective of Dixit

The objective of Dixit is to guess the correct picture card based on the clue given by the storyteller. The storyteller’s job is to provide a sentence or phrase that hints at their chosen card, without revealing it to the other players. The other players then choose a picture card from their own hand that they believe best matches the clue. The goal is to make your card ambiguous enough that some players will be tricked into choosing your card, while others will correctly identify the storyteller’s card.

Number of Players

Dixit is designed for 3 to 6 players, making it a versatile game that can be enjoyed by both small and large groups. With more players, the game becomes more challenging and unpredictable, as there are more potential picture cards to choose from.

Audience

Dixit is suitable for players of all ages. Its simple rules and beautiful artwork make it accessible to children and adults alike. The game also offers different levels of complexity, allowing players to adjust the difficulty based on the age and experience of the participants.

Overview of Dixit

In Dixit, each player takes turns being the storyteller. The storyteller begins by choosing one of their picture cards and coming up with a clue, which can be a sentence, a phrase, or even a single word. The clue should be related to the picture on the chosen card, but it should not be too obvious or too vague.

Once the clue is given, all other players select a picture card from their hand that they think best matches the clue. The storyteller then collects these chosen cards and shuffles them together with their own card. The shuffled cards are placed face up on the table, numbered from 1 to n.

All players, except for the storyteller, now vote for the card they believe is the storyteller’s card. They do so by secretly choosing a voting token with a number corresponding to the card they think is the storyteller’s. The tokens are then revealed, and the votes are placed on the respective cards.

Setup

To set up a game of Dixit, each player chooses a wooden “rabbit” counter and places it on the 0 square of the score track. The 84 picture cards are then shuffled, and 6 cards are distributed to each player. The remaining picture cards form the draw pile.

Each player takes voting tokens based on the number of players. For example, in a game with 5 players, each player takes 5 voting tokens numbered from 1 to 5.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Dixit revolves around the role of the storyteller and the guessing of picture cards. Each round, one player takes on the role of the storyteller, while the others become the guessers. The game progresses in a clockwise manner, with the storyteller passing to the next player after each round.

The storyteller’s turn begins by examining the 6 picture cards in their hand. From one of these cards, they come up with a sentence or phrase that relates to the picture. The storyteller then announces their clue out loud, without revealing which card they have chosen.

The other players, the guessers, now select a picture card from their own hand that they believe best represents the storyteller’s clue. They place their chosen card face down in front of them and give it to the storyteller, who collects all the cards.

The storyteller shuffles the received cards with their own card and places them face up on the table, numbered from 1 to n. Players must then vote for the card they think is the storyteller’s card, excluding their own card. They do this by choosing a voting token with the corresponding number and placing it face down in front of them.

Once all players have voted, the storyteller reveals their chosen card. The votes are then revealed and placed on the corresponding cards. The scoring is then determined based on the following criteria:

  • If all players find the storyteller’s card, or if no one finds it, the storyteller does not score any points. However, all the other players score 2 points each.
  • If some players find the storyteller’s card but not all, the storyteller scores 3 points, as do the players who correctly identified the card. Additionally, each player, except the storyteller, earns 1 additional point for every vote received on their own card.

Scoring

Scoring in Dixit is based on the ability to make accurate guesses and to create clues that are neither too obvious nor too obscure. The storyteller’s goal is to provide a clue that some players will correctly interpret, while others will be misled by it. This balance is key to achieving high scores.

Points are awarded as follows:

  • If all players find the storyteller’s card or if none of them find it, the storyteller scores 0 points, while all other players score 2 points.
  • If some players find the storyteller’s card, the storyteller scores 3 points, and the players who correctly identified the card also score 3 points.
  • Each player, except the storyteller, earns 1 additional point for each vote received on their own card.

Points are then marked on the score track using the wooden “rabbit” counters.

End of Game

The game of Dixit concludes when the last card from the draw pile is drawn, or when a player reaches the end of the scoring track. The player with the most points at the end of the game is declared the winner.

Dixit offers endless replayability, as each game brings new combinations of picture cards and different players’ interpretations of the clues. Its beautiful artwork and imaginative gameplay make it a favorite among board game enthusiasts around the world.

Variations

Dixit allows for several variations to the core gameplay, which can add variety and excitement to each session. Here are a few popular variations:

  • 3-Player Game: In this variation, players have seven cards in hand instead of six. Each player gives two picture cards to the storyteller, and there are five pictures displayed instead of six. The storyteller’s card must always be among the displayed pictures. Additionally, when only one player finds the storyteller’s picture, both the storyteller and the player score four points instead of three.
  • Mimes or Songs: Instead of providing a sentence as a clue, the storyteller can choose to hum a song or perform a mime inspired by their chosen picture card. The other players then search their own cards for the picture that corresponds to the hummed tune or mime. The gameplay and scoring remain the same.

Dixit offers a range of possibilities for customization and adapting the game to suit different preferences and playing styles. Whether you’re a fan of stunning artwork or enjoy the challenge of outwitting your opponents with carefully crafted clues, Dixit is a game that will keep you entertained and engaged for hours on end.
